The Mountain Goats are an indie rock band from Claremont, California, formed in 1991. Led by John Darnielle, who is often cited as one of American rock's finest lyricists, the group has released 15 studio albums. Darnielle initially recorded music on a boombox, taking the band name from a Screamin’ Jay Hawkins song. While the project began with a low-fidelity, prolific output of cassettes and vinyl, it evolved into a critically acclaimed full-band act known for intense, captivating live performances and deeply literary songwriting.
