Marmoucha Orchestra & Maripepa Contreras: Sexi Firmum Iulium
Maripepa Contreras is een van de weinige jazzhoboïsten ter wereld. In de audiovisuele voorstelling Sexi Firmum Iulium duikt ze in de gelaagde geschiedenis van haar geboortegrond. De titel verwijst naar Sexi, de Fenicische handelsstad aan de Zuid-Spaanse kust die onder de Romeinen Sexi Firmum Iulium ging heten: het huidige Almuñécar. Gevoed door klassiek, jazz en mediterrane klankwerelden vertaalt zij haar erfgoed naar eigentijdse, toekomstgerichte muziek, rauw, precies en vrij tegelijk. De visuals zijn van kunstenaar Toni Geitani uit Libanon, dat historisch verbonden is met Fenicië, dezelfde beschaving die Sexi stichtte. Samen met het Marmoucha Orchestra ontstaat een live-ervaring waarin alles met elkaar verweven raakt: klank met beeld, oorsprong met nu, Almuñécar met Amsterdam. Maripepa Contreras is artistiek coördinator, vaste arrangeur en een van de musici die aan de wieg stonden van het Marmoucha Orchestra, het Amsterdamse ensemble dat jazz, global en gecomponeerde muziek op organische wijze samenbrengt. Sexi Firmum Iulium is (mede) mogelijk gemaakt door het AFK (Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst) en door FPK (Fonds Podiumkunsten).
