An underground, nostalgic afropop night.
Mamady Kouyate is one of Guinea's most renowned guitarists and the heir to a long line of griots. Taught by his father, who pioneered the use of guitar for traditional kora and balafon lines, Mamady rose to prominence in the 1970s within Guinea's national bands during the Authenticité movement. A former member of the legendary Bembeya Jazz, Kouyate eventually moved to the United States in the early 2000s. There, he formed the Mandingo Ambassadors to celebrate the classic 1970s sound of Guinea's Sylliphone recordings, blending dazzling vocal and guitar patterns with a tight rhythm section.
