Bikini Kill is a feminist punk band that formed in Olympia, WA and Washington, DC in 1990. Credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement through their political lyrics, zines, and confrontational performances, the band toured extensively across the US, Europe, Australia, and Japan. Their discography includes several EPs and LPs originally released via independent media and self-released demo tapes. The group encouraged women and girls to start bands as a form of cultural resistance and sought to build a feminist community within the punk scene. Their touring and media creation helped establish an underground network for female voices to be heard and participate in the musical landscape.
