American-Brazilian composer Marcos Balter presents a lecture examining experimental compositional practices that engage with mythological cosmology and liturgical practices in Brazilian Afrodiasporic traditions. The session explores materials, contexts, and forms of knowledge derived from these traditions to develop new modes of construction and aesthetic intelligibility. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Balter's transdisciplinary and polystylistic work has received honors from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He currently serves as the Fritz Reiner Professor of Musical Composition at Columbia University.
