Arabische volksheld mengt poëzie, traditie en actualiteit Marcel Khalife is een volksheld in de Arabische wereld en wordt de Bob Dylan van het Midden-Oosten genoemd. Dat is te danken aan zijn poëtische songteksten waarin thema’s als verlies, verzet en verlangen worden aangesneden. De legendarische Libanese zanger en ud-virtuoos mengt traditie met eigentijdse composities, begeleid door zijn zoon Rami Khalife op piano en neef Sary Khalife op cello. Marcel Khalife rondde in 1971 zijn opleiding af aan het conservatorium van Beirut. Zijn muziek werd sterk beïnvloed door wat er destijds in zijn land gebeurde, zoals de toestroom van Palestijnse vluchtelingen en het uitbreken van de burgeroorlog. Nog altijd actueel is zijn muziek op de teksten van Mahmoud Darwish, alom beschouwd als de belangrijkste Palestijnse dichter.
