About Neofolk
Emerging from the 1980s post-punk and industrial scenes, neofolk blends traditional European folk music with experimental and esoteric themes to create a distinct, modern sound. Typical instrumentation involves acoustic guitars, strings, and pianos layered with martial drumming, industrial drones, or found-sound samples. The genre is characterized by steady, somber rhythms—often evoking military marches—and a dark, melancholic mood that explores mythology, cultural heritage, and existential philosophy. Positioned at the specific intersection of dark folk and industrial music, neofolk maintains a starkly minimalist aesthetic that separates it from standard mainstream indie folk through its intense historical preoccupation, pagan symbolism, and avant-garde origins.
