Sound profile
Emerging in the mid-1960s from the influential folk-rock movement pioneered by The Byrds, jangle rock is defined by its bright, treble-focused guitar textures and clean melodic structures. The genre's signature sound relies heavily on the shimmering, resonant chime of electric guitars, specifically twelve-string Rickenbacker models, played with ringing open chords. Rhythmically, it features a steady, moderate tempo and driving 4/4 time signatures that often contrast with its introspective or bittersweet lyrical themes. Serving as a crucial link between psychedelic pop and 1980s indie rock, it emphasizes harmonic clarity and catchy melodic hooks over heavy distortion or aggressive blues-based riffs, maintaining a polished yet organic aesthetic.
