when john ford is referred to as a mythmaker, this film is the purest version of that myth that he'd have such an expansive career weaving into the american consciousness; the wide frontier, america's questing immigrants, desperados on the margins of civilization, redemption through physical and spiritual hardship. the mountain ranges here are cavernous, bracketing all the drama in an epic wagnerian scale. not even half a century after the west was closed, and the legend has already arrived.
Out of all the titans that strode across the silent plains, John Ford is the one that most frequently makes me resent the advent of sound.Of the three wise men narratives that Ford filmed multiple times, 3 Bad Men is based on Herman Whitaker's On the Border - not to be confused with those coming out of Peter B. Kyne's The Three Godfathers. While the Kyne story was remade the most frequently (3 times by Ford and animated by Satoshi Kon), 3 Bad Men was an inspiration for Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress - and by extension the droids you're looking for. The plot sees a trio of horse thieves (Tom Santschi, J. Farrell MacDonald, and Frank Campeau) run off some rivals, only to give up on their own plans of theft when they discover the sole survivor is a young woman (Olive Borden). Despite rough exteriors, the title characters prove their hearts of gold by alternating between the roles of guardians and matchmakers - attempting to set their ward up with an only slightly bigoted cowboy (George O'Brien).I'm in love with one shot with MacDonald and Campeau parodying a dance sequence with a pan that follows the movement before transforming the composition into a bar. John Ford’s epic western Three Bad Men is pure spectacle. It’s remarkable how much Ford fits into each frame. As with his later sound films the landscape is a big part of the movie both visually and thematically. Ford spent 15 months shooting this and it shows. The desert locations are gorgeous. Meanwhile there are thousands of extras, hundreds of horses, scores of buildings and wagons and associated props, not to mention all the costumes and the coordination needed to make it come together. The story is linear and interesting. It takes several unexpected turns. The characters are fleshed out more than the typical westerns of the time. Overall Three Bad Men is one of Ford’s best silent films.
