Wow. This was so insightful and informative and infuriating. Once again, I’m leaving a movie ashamed to be an American. However, I’m inspired by the work of educators, especially those who are changing the perception of small town schools. Im also honored to have been witness to such a vibrant culture, led by devoted and dedicated elders whose sacrifices and work is not lost on their descendants. The way their kids spoke about their culture and their pride and the island…you can tell that these people are inherently good. I’m so glad that I came to this movie. (It lost a star bc it did get a little white savior-y specifically from the choir director. Love Jen Fields tho. Did she used to coach volleyball somewhere? I know I know her.)(Also the moderator of the panel was right when she said they captured the beauty of small town America. I was glad she pointed that out.)
When I first moved to Tulsa and began working at my new store, I noticed right away that there was a large population of Pacific Islanders. I got curious, started Googling, and found out about all the content covered in this documentary. I really liked the sort of loose structure here. Outside of the archival footage, the people were free to tell their own story. And speaking of the archival footage, it’s absolutely appalling how the islanders are treated. This is the kind of stuff we should be learning about in school, not allowing the government to sweep it under the rug. Learning about our country’s troubled past is vital in making sure that we don’t repeat it. I really hope this film gets more exposure because it is so important that the stories here are seen by as many people as possible.Viewed at: Circle Cinema; Tulsa, OK
