“Ok, so Freddy died in the last movie. But people like this shit, so we need to bring him back somehow. Any thoughts?”“Do we have any established lore or dream magic that could do it?”“Nope.”“Shit.”“Yeah.”“Well…alright, hear me out—”“Ok…”“What if…”“I’m listening...”“What if we had—get this—a dog, in a dream, randomly stand over his burial site, piss a stream of literal fire, and open up a gateway to Hell which then reanimates Freddy’s corpse?”“Any explanation after that?”“Absolutely not.”“Bro.”“Yeah?”“You fuckin’ nailed it.” Such an absurd sequel. All the cool parts from Dream Warriors like the hyper-specific kills and the increasingly corny one-liners are amped up to 11, with the glue that actually held all those cool parts together now replaced with logicless diarrhea. The dream rules get dumber. Things happen in the real world for no reason whatsoever. Windows explode. A kid is found drowned inside a water bed and people are just like “oh no he died, so sad”. The main final girl starts absorbing the one-dimensional personality traits of the other characters like some angsty teen Super Skrull. There’s a nonsensical omnipotent nursery rhyme that was obviously Freddy’s weakness all along. Everything is preposterous. But it doesn’t matter, because the practical effects are too legit to quit and there are hall of fame-worthy kills like the air-sucking asthma attack and the incredible elbow-shattering-bench-press-roach-transformation-glue-trap-squishy-squash. People have said this was also the MTV-ification of the Elm Street films, but that’s never really bothered me. Like, good lord, Freddy gets literally torn apart by the souls trapped within his body; it's terrible, but it’s fun. And besides, things get worse from here anyway.
The kills are so fun and creative in this one it’s hard not to love it. They did my Dream Warriors dirty as fuck though
Freddy Krueger is resurrected to hunt down the surviving Dream Warriors and a young woman who possesses the power to enter others' dreams.
The film was directed by Renny Harlin in 1988, marking his breakthrough Hollywood feature before directing major action blockbusters.
