Apocalypse Z caught my attention because, well, I’ll give any zombie movie a shot. It’s not the worst out there, but it has its issues. The main issue is how much it drifts into other genres. It takes forever to really get going, and then there’s a big chunk where you almost forget it’s supposed to be a zombie movie. Exploring social issues is familiar ground for the genre, but there needs to be a balance. The runtime stretches because of these added subplots, and it seriously affects the pacing. It feels like watching three separate episodes in a row, each with a distinct shift in plot flow. And the main character’s flashbacks? They’re clearly meant to add emotional depth, but they miss the mark, feeling unnecessary and distracting. On the bright side, the VFX and makeup were solid. They leaned into practical effects, which I appreciated, it added some grit to the visuals. There was potential here, but the story could’ve used more refining; there were just too many things to adjust.
