There's an amazing car/motorcycle chase halfway through this movie that, if it were made today, would be instantly legendary. However, it's been forgotten because scenes like this were being made practically every week in Hong Kong at the time. It might not even be one of Jackie Chan's 10 best scenes.This is often referred to as Chan's take on Raiders of the Lost Ark, but it actually isn't. After the opening scene - during which he sustained a skull fracture that nearly killed him - it becomes a movie about Jackie & Alan Tam driving around in a Mitsubishi. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing was radically reconceived while Jackie was convalescing. Man there are some slow stretches in this one.

This time, our favorite martial arts extraordinaire and his friends have to fight a bunch of evil monks to make himself a holy armour with a magnitude of power and riches. He does this by kicking some arses and pulling some stunts that will make Tom Cruise envy, namely that big one at the end where he jumps from a mountain with, I believe, no parachute (or at least he never used it) towards an air balloon. I was really on the edge of my seat with that one. Vor der Flimmerkiste einer eingehenden Zeitreise mit maskierten Ureinwohnern den Blick hoch zum Götterschwert und deiner zeitlosen Akrobatik. High Upon High… sehe ich das grell ausgeleuchtete Wien. Mit Montagen rauchender Mönchskuten und Popsternchen im blauen Farbenmeer gebannt auf 240p. High Upon High… erkenne ich dich glitzernden Augen wieder. Deine aus dem Baukasten gebauten Autos der 80er mit ihren Schulterpolstern und den Hemden in der Hose tragenden Fahrern wie Beifahrern. High Upon High… rieseln die Sterne, wenn du mich gebrochen erinnernd wiederauflebend an dich erinnerst. An deinem seltsam entfremdenden Englisch mit dem höhersteigenden „High Upon High“. High Upon High… wo du dich an Heißluftballonen herunterlässt. Als die größte Actioneinlage nebst gleich vier äußerst schlagkräftigen Pam Grier Double im Einsatz ihrer Absätze. High Upon High… grinse ich zurückgeschraubter zwanzig Jahre mir dir an meiner Seite. Und erlebe sie heute wie damals die Hände zum Jubel erhoben meiner Ekstase einer 3,5/5 Vergabe.
