A horror movie duology: "The Black Veil" is set in 1888, as the widow of a psychiatrist visits a college friend who is performing in a theatre that enacts gruesome mutilations and torture. In "Listen to Midnight" a photographer recounts the events leading up to his murder, which is linked to a story he had heard in Japan about a female dragonfly luring the male to his death.

For a no-budget SOV horror movie, this is surprisingly ambitious and boasts a neat look that's far closer to late '80s video art than it is to the usual SOV style of "Hey guys, I bought a camcorder, let's go make a movie at your dad's house!"The opening credits are a delightful melange of just about every cheesy late '80s video font you can imagineI think it was intended to be for Brinke Stevens what Trilogy of Terror was for Karen Black, but where Black played a wide variety of roles, it took me a while to even realize Stevens' characters were meant to be different peopleHow many stories are in this? There's a prologue that doesn't tie into anything, followed by the Dark Romances title card, followed by a wraparound that gets its own title, followed by a flashback that gets its own title, followed by a return to the wraparound, followed by the Dark Romances title card again, followed by another story that gets its own title, followed by nothing because it just stopsThe prologue's a whiff, the flashback badly runs out of steam after a promising setup (with a really admirable two-dollar video art staging of a Grand Guignol theater performance), and the final story mood-shifts hard into a neon noir that's halfway between Tales from the Darkside and The Hitchhiker (complimentary)
It is a shot-on-video horror anthology containing two distinct tales involving a 19th-century gothic theater troupe and a doomed photographer.
It was directed by Mark Shepard in 1990.
