Educating Rita is an incredible charming and funny little British film which explores class and self discovery through Rita a working class girl who wishes to break out her life and develops a friendship with her Tutor Frank who is a jaded alcoholic and from there her life changes for either better or worse. The film looks into the clash between social classes and the power a different education has on a individual but the film both critiques the snobbery of this idea and also the limitations people of a lower class seem to have in their day to day life and reconsiders this view to the audience throughout the runtime. Performance wise this film is incredibly strong Julie Walter’s in her breakout role is full of charm and brings a raw honestly to her surroundings and her transformation is incredibly affecting but believable, while Caine is equally great as Frank who perfectly plays a man disillusioned by life but who’s life is slowly revitalised by his relationship with Rita and it’s incredibly warm and sweet to watch. Overall though yeah it’s a great little British film which mixes drama and comedy and mixes with that with strong themes and performances and it’s more stage like feel benefits it’s massive but it’s interesting how this film can teach you something over 40 years later.
i believe i just watched this at the perfect time in my life. it’s so inspiring, empowering, and makes me proud to be a woman. i need to see more characters like Rita.
