very nice. enb has secretly nearly flawless technique.enb philharmonic goes hard as usual, unlike certain other company orchestras, naming no names.setting was very interesting although didn’t mesh with the costumes and booo cinema for not providing a libretto. if you have a minimalist set you need a libretto.my standouts:lilac fairy - GORGEOUS. i need her odette yesterday carabosse - incredible acting for so youngfinger fairy - really strong and enjoyable to watch for such a horrible role lmaobluebirds - both had very clean footworkchloe keneally as one of the fairies!! i always like seeing her in stuff for adults.character dances - impressive actually although very stylised but that’s what you get i suppose desiré - no comment, very little actual dancing apart from his variation which was rather good.aurora - where do i begin? miscast. beautiful classical technique but it just wasn’t believable to watch, she didn’t connect with anything at all, didn’t seem like she remembered she was playing a teenager. also had a few habits which are pet peeves of mine: swan/giselle arabesque arm for any serious moment, hyperextended supporting leg, 180+ penché. i’d like to see another dancer in the role to compare - thought it was odd that this one was chosen for the film when i’m sure there were others also doing it in the original run.also had me realise that the plot of sleeping beauty is really weird actually. every time i watch a full length ballet i start itching at my skin thinking about the possibilities of taking the patriarchy out of it. but then it would not so much be ballet. please give me a cinema relay of annabelle lopez ochoa’s gentleman jack for my health and wellbeing right now.short film in the middle was very interesting but was limited by the costumes having too heavy a fabric and also what you get when working with teenage dancers - immature understanding of contrast or communication in movement. but yay for enbyouthco i’m pleased for them.and now for my rant!: the costume designer was smoking something.- FAIRIES WITHOUT WINGS ☹️☹️☹️💔💔💔 also they were not colourful and did not fit the setting. sparkles don’t replace a lack of creativity- DIABOLICAL white cat costume. no tail? no mask? no fur? just put her in a white puss in boots costume so we can see the steps, and make puss in boots the actual russet colour he’s supposed to be.- bluebirds had no feathers 🤨- ugly metallic tights!- ugly crowns!!!- historical costumes were nice and also accurate but spanned 150 years in 18. silly- the queen’s panniers but no hoops… she doesn’t need freedom of movement around her thighs it’s a character role. it looks silly- why were the corps ALL pink. stop it i can’t tell one person from the next.- aurora didn’t fit in with the setting :(that being said, i liked: - the four princes- the carabosse costume. and her emo black nails.in conclusion, carabosse and the lilac fairy should have kissed if they wanted a 5 star rating from me, but that was never going to happen. buck up enb.
