I forgot how fucking kinky this movie is.
"What happened to me?""I don't know, but it was pretty sensational!"A football star becomes an intergalactic superhero? Only in America.Don't let the rating fool you, this movie is one heck of a fun time. It's just that there aren't many definitions of the word "good" that it fits into. As a superhero film, it runs into the fatal flaw that there's almost nothing heroic about Flash (he solves his problems most often by running away or unfairly tricking his enemies). The screenplay is a mess and feels like it was written on the fly, the acting ranges from overblown to wooden with no middle ground in between, and the effects look so silly I can't imagine a time anyone was able to take them seriously. But if you're looking for Campy Funtimes, Flash Gordon might be just the movie for you. It's hard to explain exactly how ridiculous it is without diving straight into the plot: in the first 15 minutes, Flash is attacked by evil intergalactic emperor Ming, forced to crash-land his private jet into the secret laboratory of mad scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov, and launched into outer space in a rocket created out of the paranoid delusion that the Moon is going to crash into Earth. And it only gets crazier from there. If you're a fan of wacky space opera then I really can't recommend this highly enough. There's everything a good space adventure needs: spaceships, alien planets, rocket scooters, hawkmen, Timothy Dalton—the list goes on. If you're looking for a serious drama this is not the movie for you, but if you're looking for zany space antics then look no further than Flash Gordon.Essential Sci-Fi | Spaceship!Comic Book SuperheroesHow is it that as a film community we've come to understand and appreciate Flash Gordon for what it is, but when something like Jupiter Ascending comes around we jump all over it like it's Transformers 17?
