if everything that man creates is information, then tools, cities, children and society are extensions of the human genome and its intentions.if man can create his world with intention, that means that for those creations, nothing is mechanistic, nothing is meaningless, that they have a god who made them for a specific purpose.if man creates everything for a purpose, and children, which become man, are created by man, then man is his own god, and creates himself with a meaningful destiny and soul.but man doesn't just create children. he also creates dolls in the mirror image of his own divinity. man gives birth to a world of divine meaning; god cannot help but create more gods.

One of my all time favorite movies about a man and his dog. Oshii does something similar to what he did with Patlabor, following up a groundbreaking and mega-popular original with a different and much more philosophical sequel. Here Batou, haunted by the disappearance of the Major, expounds on The Bible, Milton, Max Weber, Confucius and others while investigating a case of sex androids going insane, killing their owners, and then committing "suicide." An existential detective story that questions just how and why human beings seek to replicate ourselves. The film suggests that we seek out inanimate facsimiles of life in art and technology to deal with our suspicion that our own conscious experience of reality may just be a more advanced equivalent of a wind-up doll.
