What people say

The Oscar Expert2.5

Well meaning and good fun and all that. But I thought this an extremely obvious portrayal of the grieving process that uses only the most blatant cues to tell us how the protagonist is feeling. Just nothing at all to consider that is not in front of your face. Very little that is actually insightful. Supporting characters extremely shallow. Kikuchi was great though. Kinda feels manufactured to win the Sundance audience award.

Matt Neglia3.5

HA-CHAN, SHAKE YOUR BOOTY! is a vibrant, tonally erratic, emotionally rich celebration of dance and its resilient power in the face of grief, led by an impressively complex lead performance from Rinko Kikuchi. Director Josef Kubota Wladyka instills the film with personal meaning, crafting a visually bold tribute to his mother. Kinetic choreography, whimsical imagery, and a perfectly curated soundtrack transforms what could’ve been a bleak outlook on loss into something more exciting and life-affirming.
