This Chinese superhero flips on the satire of "The Boys" with Stephen Chow's 'mo lei tau' and half-baked visual effects. But its uneven writing blurs the line between commentary on bureaucracy and propaganda for the CCP.
Thirty years ago, the Super Ying Association led by Superman Wang Changhai crushed the aliens. Years later, Wang Changhai was appointed to return to his hometown to set up a combat squad, but in the town of Rheinland, which had been peaceful for many years, human feelings and courtesies have left Wang Changhai overwhelmed, creating layers of obstacles to Wang's ability to complete his mission.

强如祖国人来了也得被霸凌 | Is Lying Town the Chinese Hidden Leaf Village? Even Homelander Would Get Bullied Here. To be completely honest, when I first watched the trailer for ‘Keep Real’ a few months ago, my "trash-movie radar" was blaring non-stop. The cringe-inducing jokes reminiscent of Mahua FunAge comedies, the atrocious visual texture, and Bai Jingting sporting that blatant Temu version of the Homelander suit... Before I even set foot in the theater, the mountain of prejudice in my mind told me one thing: this was definitely another brainless, fan-service cash grab.---但也许是预期值太低了? But perhaps it was because my expectations were buried six feet under, the actual theater experience didn’t turn out to be the unmitigated disaster I anticipated.---画面上……emmm,确实挺烂的,服化道整体都是电视剧水准,并且还不是贵的那档。 Visually... well, it’s undeniably rough. The costume design, makeup, and props are strictly mid-to-low-tier TV drama quality. For a superhero movie, CGI sequences are painfully scarce; the lone disaster scene reeks of a cheap, low-grade green screen effect. Its overall production value feels painfully similar to those specific comedies that completely tanked a studio's reputation a few years back. You get the idea.---如果有人是奔着看中国漫威DC电影、或者是祖国版《黑袍纠察队》的目的来看本片,那必将会非常失望,压根都不能算同一类型的电影。If anyone walks into this expecting a Chinese equivalent of Marvel/DC, or a localized version of The Boys, they are bound to be sorely disappointed. This simply doesn't belong to the same genre.---笑点营造倒是挺自然的,在段子的融入上并不算机制。 Fortunately, the comedic timing feels surprisingly natural, and the gags don't land with a cringey thud. The core humor stems from the jarring collision between the protagonist Wang Changhai's brutally honest, naive persona and the dark, Machiavellian doublespeak of local bureaucracy. The contrast is dialed up to eleven, delivering some genuinely clever punchlines. During the first half of the film, the theater was filled with infectious laughter.---而在预告片 and 海报中那位看着很猎奇的白祖国人王长海,在正片里的观感并没有那么违和,本身他那套和周围环境格格不入的夸张战服也是电影试图营造的笑果之一。 As for the bizarre-looking "White Homelander" Wang Changhai we saw in the promotional posters, his presence in the actual film isn't as jarring as expected. His ostentatious, out-of-place superhero suit is entirely a deliberate comedic device meant to highlight how alienated he is from his surroundings. To give credit where it's due, once he sports a short haircut in the latter half, he looks quite sharp. Bai Jingting’s performance as a superhero is decent enough to escape any heavy criticism.---提到“祖国人”,此时估计就会有人搬出片方在之前的说辞,用各种设计稿来反驳我说王长海的战衣并非Copy自祖国人,而是来源于中国古代盔甲纹样啥的。 When talking about "Homelander," I'm sure some defense squad will parrot the studio's PR line, flashing concept arts to argue that Wang’s suit isn’t a copycat but rather inspired by ancient Chinese armor patterns. But having watched the film, the homage to Homelander is blindingly obvious. Beyond the visual blueprint—the pauldrons, the belt, the high collar, and the gloves—Wang’s posture (striding forward with hands behind his back), his mid-air takeoff pose, his milk-drinking-esque abstinence from alcohol, and his childlike, painfully innocent brain in the first half are all textbook Homelander traits. There's no point in whitewashing the imitation, and frankly, it doesn't matter. The film establishes itself as a parody satire; it already features a ragtag team of grassroots superheroes who are explicit bootlegs of Wolverine, Black Widow, and Doctor Strange. Throwing a Homelander clone into the mix shouldn't raise any eyebrows.---总体来说,我原以为《特立独行》会是一部天雷滚滚的惊天烂片,心理预期值是满分10分只有2分还是因为最低只能打1颗星的那种,结果最后居然考到5分6分的及格线水准,也算是超越预期了。All in all, I expected ‘Keep Real’ to be an absolute trainwreck—a 2/10 rating where the 2 points were only granted because the system won't let me give a 0-star review. Yet, it managed to scrape by at a 5 or 6 out of 10 passing grade. However, the biggest curveball of this movie is its core. It isn’t just a mindless, slapstick parody; it’s a political satire that takes direct aim at bureaucratic formalism and the rot of local corruption. In a way, the sheer audacity of its social commentary is jaw-dropping. There were moments where I genuinely wondered how certain lines managed to slip past the censorship boards. I have immense respect for the film's thematic ambition alone.---近年来国内讨伐官商勾结、打击腐败的正能量影视作品其实并不少,但《特立独行》对于形式主义和一些更底层本质的问题上的阴阳和抨击,确实是很特立独行了。 While domestic cinema has seen no shortage of dramas tackling collusion between officials and businessmen, ‘Keep Real’ stands out through its unique brand of sarcastic, passive-aggressive mockery targeting structural formalism and deep-rooted systemic issues. The character profiles of Magistrate Wang and Vice Mayor Zhao carry a nuanced depth—painfully common in real life, yet remarkably rare in mainstream Chinese cinema. The depiction of bureaucratic doublespeak is so disturbingly vivid that by the time "justice is served" at the end, I couldn’t help but wonder if Ding Yongdai's character (the high-ranking official offering warm condolences) was just another smiling tiger playing his own political game.---只可惜本片的立意虽好,但后半段的处理过程太过于粗糙魔幻,还套了一个超级英雄的夸张外壳,导致最终的观感还是很不伦不类,蛮可惜的。Unfortunately, while the premise is commendable, the execution in the second half collapses into a rushed, fantastical mess. Encasing a political drama inside an exaggerated superhero shell leaves the final product feeling neither here nor there. If you stripped away the superpowers and focused entirely on human nature grappling with the dark arts of officialdom—positioning Wang Changhai not as a superhero, but as a prosecutor or a central inspector teaming up with Xia Mu and Secretary Jin—this could have achieved the profound narrative heights of masterpieces like The Long Night. Instead, by shoehorning in a superhero as a literal deus ex machina, the film riddles itself with logical plot holes that even a nonsensical comedy cannot justify. It becomes a bloated chimera that tries to be funny, expose human suffering, satirize politics, and deliver action set-pieces all at once, ultimately becoming a master of none.---你很难想象一个刀枪不入、一秒可以飞个一百公里、眼睛可以放射镭射激光、近乎无敌的超级英雄,能在一个小小县城里混得如此憋屈,编剧再怎么想让这事的讽刺意味拉满,制造反差的喜剧效果,也不能有辱观众最基本的常识判断吧?It strains all credulity to watch a near-invincible superhero—who is bulletproof, flies at Mach speed, and shoots laser beams from his eyes—get so utterly humiliated and suffocated by small-town politics in Lying Town. No matter how desperately the screenwriters wanted to maximize the satirical contrast for comedic effect, they shouldn't insult the audience's basic common sense.---我明白本片的意图,他们想让王长海成为祖国人的镜像对照组,通过这两人的故事对比体现出两种截然不同的体系和制度——一边推崇自由,让祖国人可以站在高处月牙天冲,大吼“I can do whatever the fk I want!!”,一边则墨守成规,王长海连连办事不利后只能在高处迎风崩溃,觉得自己什么也做不到。 说得通吗?I understand the creative intent: they wanted Wang Changhai to serve as a mirror image to Homelander, juxtaposing their trajectories to reflect two entirely different institutional systems. One promotes absolute freedom, allowing Homelander to stand on a skyscraper, laser people, and scream, "I can do whatever the fk I want!!" The other binds its hero in red tape, leaving Wang Changhai to break down in the wind, wallowing in a helpless identity crisis after failing repeatedly due to bureaucratic constraints. However, pushing this contrast to such extremes only exposes the sheer absurdity of the narrative. Gifted with the same god-like powers (constitutionally, Wang is arguably stronger), Homelander can force the US President to bow down to him. Yet Wang Changhai, tasked with taking down a mere town magistrate—a feat that should require zero effort—has to play the long game, swallowing his pride to act as a sycophantic, brown-nosing bootlicker in Lying Town. Are we seriously supposed to buy into this?---而他的计划是什么呢? He pretends to be the magistrate's right-hand man, covertly mines coal to hollow out the foundations of Lying Town using substandard backfill materials, waits for a catastrophic sinkhole collapse, and then simply refrains from saving the magistrate when he's in danger. Once the magistrate is dead, the sky clears over Lying Town...---先不说这个计划达成的复杂麻烦程度和渺茫的实现可能性,就说他挖煤这段,岂不是直接连累了莱茵县人民的生命安全和将来的生产发展,在灾后又需要投入多少的重建财力? Putting aside the astronomical complexity and the slim probability of success for such a convoluted plot, let's look at the mining phase: isn't he directly endangering the lives and future livelihood of the citizens of Lying Town? How much public funds will be required for post-disaster reconstruction? Although the film downplays the devastation—conveniently claiming only twenty minor injuries and exactly four villain casualties—the actual scale of destruction shown on screen makes it impossible to believe that no innocent civilians were crushed under the collapsing buildings. It's too neat of a surgical strike. Take the transport van holding the hostages; in reality, a crash that violent would have killed everyone inside. How could Wang ensure his plan wouldn't result in massive collateral damage?---他若真的想让县长死(结尾有说,“他死了,大家才能好好的活。” If his ultimate goal was the magistrate's death (as explicitly validated at the end: "Only when he dies can everyone else truly live"), a god-like entity wouldn't need to stage a localized earthquake. He could have orchestrated a simple, untraceable accident in seconds. Instead, he spends half the movie putting on an overacted, submissive charade. It’s frustratingly passive to watch, narratively incoherent, and sloppily discards the compelling, righteous investigative arcs of Secretary Jin and Xia Mu, causing the entire third act to derail.---你想搞反转剧情可以,但观众喜欢的是扮猪吃老虎的反转,绝对不是霸王龙扮苍蝇吃老鼠的那种反转。Look, plot twists are fine, but audiences cheer for a "wolf in sheep's clothing" trope—not a Tyrannosaurus Rex disguising itself as a common fly just to catch a mouse.---电影里的人也不是不明白这点,前半段县长和他小舅子还害怕,”万一他把我们呲了,嗖一下飞上天谁能管得了他?“,“能限制他行为的,只有他心中的道德标准。” Even the characters in the film acknowledged this reality early on. In the first half, the magistrate and his brother-in-law were genuinely terrified: "What if he just vaporizes us and flies away? Who could possibly stop him?" and "The only thing binding him is his own moral compass." Yet, in the latter half, everyone collectively develops amnesia regarding his god-like status. Every low-level thug treats him like a joke. Lying Town truly inherits the "Will of Fire" from Naruto's Hidden Leaf Village—a place so inherently toxic that even Homelander would get ruthlessly bullied. To top it all off, Wang is stripped of his superhero title due to "ineffective rescue efforts." Is this supposed to make sense? Aside from leaving a terrible aftertaste in the audience's mouth, what was the narrative point?【BY:夏多/Xiaduo】
