"Let them fight."Honda returns to direct the first color Godzilla film, which features a convoluted plot wherein a pharmaceutical company basically contrives, along with a helpless yet eventually complicit military, to stage a fight between Kong and Godzilla to boost TV ratings on the network they sponsor. It all somehow exists at a tantalizing crossroads of hilariously absurd and unsettlingly plausible. Highlights include Kong getting blackout drunk on his island's native tribe's moonshine and a battle with a giant octopus (actually just a real octopus, looking kind of confused on a miniature set).
Everything is wrestling At one point a woman asks a question "who do you think would win? Godzilla or King Kong?" to which a man replies "don't be serious. It's not a wrestling match" But King Kong vs. Godzilla is a wrestling match and it is a wrestling movie. Just look at the poster which bills the confrontation as "The Two Mightiest Monsters of All Time!" as if to make this a meeting of titans on the level of John Cena and Stone Cold Steve Austin. The plot mechanics even benefit from the idea of promotion when a pharmaceutical company with the help of a complicit military basically stage a fight between King Kong and a recently resurfaced Godzilla. The pharmaceutical company is looking to boost their fledgling TV ratings by bringing over King Kong to fight the beast and broadcasting it on their channel. It doesn't make a lick of sense, but it's basically wrestling mechanics. Then they fight, and Godzilla jobs to King Kong. Bless this stupid movie and bless wrestling.
A pharmaceutical company captures King Kong from a remote island to boost television ratings by pitting him against the newly awakened Godzilla.
It was directed by Ishirō Honda in 1962, a prominent Japanese director renowned for creating landmark monster films.
