Does a lot with very little. Unique ethnofuturistic sci fi story about the future of the Congo within the intense exploitation and Incredible oppression its people suffer under. The film manifests something better. By wearing the precious metals as a costume, owning their wealth that is stolen from them, the people of the Congo reclaim their agency and themselves. Powerful stuff. But long in the tooth; it’s around 15 minutes long when it doesn’t need to be more than 10.
African sci-fi? I’m here for it
An afronaut emerges from a spaceship wreck in a volcanic crater and descends into Goma to seek a way to change the future for his people.
Mulika was directed by Maisha Maene in 2022, known for exploring Africanfuturist themes in short cinema.
