Musk

Katie Walsh

Elon Musk is the male Elizabeth Holmes, which means he didn’t go to prison and is the richest and most powerful person in the world. This is probably an unfair assessment of Elizabeth Holmes, she wouldn’t have done DOGE. This movie is not an easy sit but I do fear it’s required viewing. (the digital Musk is CGI, not AI, they say)

As a YouTuber, I feel very familiar with the way Alex Gibney works; of all the major documentarians he's the one who feels the most like a "content creator" rather than a real artist. He finds the topic of the day and he does his best to illustrate it but it seems like his instincts lead him to wherever the buzz is; it's clickbait, basically. That doesn't make his docs worthless, they tend to be pretty interesting, but they also feel like they don't hit very hard, especially if you're already familiar with the topic. They're a nice digestible compendium of all the already known material. Content-wise: I feel like I already knew all this info, save the pretty dark stuff at the end where Elon Musk may have compromised our elections, but it is nice to see it all packaged together. Segmenting it into five-minute chapters makes it feel not very deep but at least pretty broad. Stylistically, I'd be more sympathetic to Gibney's need to spice things up if his aesthetic decisions weren't always so incredibly bad, with dumb hacky soundtrack choices ("Lovefool" by the Cardigans to show how close Trump and Musk are, a-hyuck hyuck hyuck), long long-ass tedious video game segments to show him "killing" (firing) everyone everywhere he works, and worst of all a hideous AI deepfake Elon Musk to voice quotes he doesn't have footage for -- or in some cases, footage that he does have. Just a bizarre choice in a doc partially about the dangers of AI! Might be meant for irony's sake but the animation is so fucking ugly I couldn't look at it and I don't think it's meant to be ironic, it's because Gibney is just desperate to jazz things up because just like all his docs he doesn't trust the material.
