Rupert Friend and Mackenzie Davis don't quite work as a couple, not matter which iteration they're in, which stops My Notes on Mars from ever soaring. But both of them give intriguing performances, and Lili Horvát's appealingly enigmatic screenplay gives them a lot to play with - Davis, in particular, is so watchable. Altogether, the movie weaves quite a spell, despite never cohering into something fully satisfying.
