A grounded, bleak documentary.
A polar bear is forced to navigate a human world of tourists, wildlife officers, and hunters as its ancient migration collides with modern life. When a sacred predator is branded a nuisance, it becomes unclear who truly belongs in this shared landscape.

NUISANCE BEAR is a quietly devastating and visually striking documentary on the coexistence between man and nature gone wrong. With stunning cinematography and a chilling atmosphere, Gabriela Osio Vanden and Jack Weisman’s feature places us alongside, and sometimes directly in the helpless face of, a polar bear as it navigates a world of tourists, officers, and hunters in an environment it was never meant to inhabit, just as we were never meant to inhabit its. I found myself mesmerized and increasingly angry, frustratingly reacting to how we attempt to manage, contain, commodify, and destroy Mother Nature. Guided by thoughtful Inuit narration, the film resists easy answers and instead confronts us with our own spectator relationship to wildlife, asking us to question who the real “nuisance” is in a manner that is both thrilling and unsettling.
Utilizes observational filmmaking to draw a distinctly defined line between the displacement of polar bears and the Indigenous people by colonialism. A quiet, but no less scathing, indictment of how land is robbed of its true purpose and the balance of nature is thrown completely off balance all so a few tourists can snap some photos and civilization at large can continue to prioritize convenience over intentional stewardship of the planet.
It follows polar bears navigating a human world of tourists and wildlife officers in Churchill, Manitoba.
