once he finally appears, the initial shots of the Phantom deep in the sewers beneath the opera house are so striking. he is framed from above in a wide shot, completely dwarfed by the blackness of the sewer around him. both the empty space and the angle shrink his body, giving his half gaze up into the music drifting down from the opera an air of quiet pleading which evokes the tragedy of the character so well.this Phantom is both the the most sympathetic and the most irredeemable i've seen yet. his transformation marks a complete and total break from who he was before. i was intrigued by undercurrents of anti-capitalist sentiment: the Phantom a worker and charitable donor who receives no kindness or pity when he is no longer useful or can no longer pay. but this is lost when he goes on to become perhaps the most indiscriminate and mindless in his violence and murder. my favorite part though is just the absolute lushness of the technicolor photography, which make the film's many opera scenes positively glow. i will always be gaga for technicolor soft focus close-ups. be still my gay, gay heart...and i love the ending, in which Christine ditches her two suitors completely and they decide to go to dinner together instead. righteous and gay, respectively!
The costume designs are lavish, the set productions are grandiose and the music is the crème de la crème. But it doesn’t help that Claude Rains told the make-ups artists to hardly make his character disfigured like wtf? He definitely was miscast and would’ve been a bit better if originally rumored Lon Chaney Jr. got the role.
