A must see for anyone who wants to make a movie. Filmschool in 60 minutes.
"We need action, we need sex, we need humor, and a slight social statement."This hourlong documentary about Roger Corman is notable for having been shot during the heyday of New World Pictures. Ron Howard, looking about 12 years old, talks about directing Grand Theft Auto, and we see New World trailer editors Allan Arkush and Joe Dante goofing around on the eve of the release of their first film, Hollywood Boulevard. Jonathan Demme, David Carradine, Jonathan Kaplan, and cocaine-era Martin Scorsese provide testimonials. The second half is a checklist of Corman's career up to 1978, with particular emphasis on the Poe period. Corman talks about discovering Nicholson and Coppola, distributing European art films, and his Freudian theories of horror ("I believe horror is largely the recreation of childhood fears..."). As for directing, Corman admits he doesn't have the energy he used to, and takes more pleasure in planning a movie than waking up at 6am to direct it. Paul Bartel theorizes that Corman believes in the producer as auteur, and that it doesn't really matter to Corman who directs each movie (Bartel praises Corman for coming up with "the most important element" of Death Race 2000, the concept). The documentary tries to pose some questions about whether or not Corman is an Artist or a Schlockmeister, and whether he fosters or exploits young talent, etcetera. A gravel-voiced narrator sounds Very Serious.Skimpy, superficial, but irresistible.
