This is one of Japanese music icon Ryuichi Sakamoto's favorite quotes, and the message that he leaves for viewers at the end of his final concert film, shot before he succumbed to cancer in March 2023. Consisting of only Sakamoto and his piano, Opus features the final live performances of 20 songs that Sakamoto meticulously curated to encapsulate his distinguished 40-year career.

I cry a lot at movies but there’s only been a few times I’ve ever cried more than I did during Sakamoto’s final performance of Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and the subsequent shots. I could have watched him play piano forever. the greatest musical mind of my lifetime. I miss him every day.
Truly stunning. This film is pretty much a psychology & attention test, checking to see if one has the patience & appreciation & humility to sit still and stay focused watching 1 hour 45 minutes of this Japanese master of music playing the piano and that's it. That's all there is to it. A lot of people at my screening failed this test. Anyway... It's a bit grim to say, but this felt like Sakamoto knew he was playing his funeral and played his heart out anyway. It's amazing that they also show him making mistakes and expressing his exhaustion, but this is human. Yet this human and his performances / compositions will now live on forever in history as some of the finest work. Maestro.
70Found this more frustrating than I would've liked. It didn't help that this was the Milwaukee Film Festival's choice for a 'super-secret-member's screening', so I was thrown into this movie mostly without context. I'd estimate around 70 or so walkouts, and the constant shuffling and murmuring was enough to throw my viewing experience off-balance. Beautiful film about the finality in a life's work, legacy and pain and transcending above it, even in the face of death. Let's just say, I wouldn't have picked this as a film to show to a packed audience unexpectedly, but well worth seeing.
