petition to stop suki waterhouse (a 29 yo woman) from playing a teenager again. enough is enough, go and be a grown up babe, you deserve it.
Simon Barrett’s Supernatural tinged murder mystery whodunnit slasher giallo has been high on my watch list for a while—seemingly feeling like it would be right up my alley and for the most part it was. There’s a few moments here and there in the first act where I felt like this could’ve used a bit more spunk and a little story tightening… but color me surprised on how this went for a more subdued path before eventually letting loose with the bloodshed in the third act. Suki Waterhouse is excellent here and everyone else puts in solid work as well, the stylish eye candy camera work from Karim Hussain looked gorgeous and his visual flourishes really helped build a mood, and I adored the score by Tobias Vethake aka Sicker Man—his soundwaves fit this moody atmospheric movie perfectly. The paving felt a little wonky to me in the second act but not enough to derail everything… plus I dug the cozy ominous setting, the twisty script, and how some of the set pieces here are pulled off so well that they might end up being some of my favorite scenes of the year—that solo dance headphone scene was just what I look for in movies like this and that close up knife slashing/blood splatter was aces. I was dead set on giving this 3 star movie 3 stars but that final scene that harkens back to endings we just don’t get anymore sealed the extra half star deal for me.Even though this has 90’s whodunnit horror vibes, Seance feels more akin to something like The House that Screamed and weirdo haunted hokum from the 80’s than it does to Scream, and despite not being a throwback it kinda feels like the perfect blueprint for a lost 80’s supernatural slasher movie (specifically the final moments), and if this was made in 1987 and unearthed by like, Arrow video or Vinegar Syndrome, idiots like me would love it because that very specific genre niche is our jam.Anyways, the poster here on LB is amazing.
