VIFF 2024 #8A fun and socially conscious comedy-thriller that sees writer-director-actor Kaniehtiio Horn star as Ziggy, a Mohawk woman / social media influencer that has just landed her first big sponsorship. The problem lies in the fact that her sponsorship is from a seed manufacturer who’s business model and genetically modified seeding practices operate in exact opposition to the inherited sustainable farming traditions of Ziggy’s ancestors. There’s a lot to like here. Loved the indigenous peoples representation and it felt very similar in style and tone to an episode of Reservation Dogs. The films takes a large logical leap in it’s reveal of who the main antagonist is and what his motivations are. Although there are some hints as to who this person might be, the film completely forgoes connecting the logical dots and skips right to an exposition dump of what this character is truly after and why. Thankfully, Ziggy’s revenge tour mostly makes up for the minor gripe. It’s a fun final act that highlights well the true beating heart of the film. It’s a really fun festival watch as plenty of patrons were cheering Ziggy along. Worth checking out. 2024 RankedDegrees of Kevin Bacon: 21. Kanietiio Horn and Mickey Rourke in Immortals2. "Go fuck 'em up"[North Bay Film Festival 2024 film 7 of 10] Ziggy (Kaniehtiio Horn), a prominent Mohawk social media influencer, finds herself at odds with her new corporate sponsor when she discovers they want to exert complete control over the global food market by patenting seeds. A trip home to watch her aunt's house turns into a quest for vengeance that leads her to reconnect with her roots when the company makes things personal by hurting what she loves and threatening her heritage, legacy and community. Tonally, Seeds has lot in common with films like Ready or Not, Abigail or Me3an (though it's less of a horror than it is a thriller and is far more grounded in relevant social issues). Aside from a lazy writing trope of introducing a pet just to establish bad guy cred by having them harm it (a hangup of mine and took me out of the film, it may not bother you), this is a fun ride that punches up at a deserving target. The humour mostly hits, the acting is great across the board with Horn's turn in the lead being of particular note and the message hits. The underrepresented cultural perspective is also very welcome and with luck will appear in more and more films going forward. Seeds is an intense roar of rage against corporate colonial violence that is as satisfying a piece of blood soaked revenge story telling as it is sure to raise the unsettling question of whether such revenge is worth becoming a monster of a sort yourself to achieve.
A Mohawk social media influencer becomes entangled in a dangerous conflict with corporate interests attempting to patent seeds and control food markets.
