Limbs are ripped off, body parts are sliced, and blood is splattered all over the place, with dead bodies hanging around for good measure. This is yet another piece of evidence that when it comes to wuxia films, Tsui is right up there as one of the very best. His kinetic sensibilities fit the genre perfectly, as every fight sequence is brimming with an infectious amount of energy that’s almost like cocaine—you can’t help but get a kick out of it. Even the random training montages, with a character swinging around his weapon of choice, mostly a sword, are exciting. The cinematography is truly great, with an almost surreal vibe heightened by the lighting and the production design.I have to say I was left very unimpressed with Vincent back in the Once Upon a Time in China movie, but here he makes up for it in spades. He has this incredible screen presence, and his martial arts skills are really awesome to watch. The rest of the cast also do a great job, making you care for their characters or feel the sense of threat, as is the case with the sadistic villain.All in all, this is arguably one of the darkest and bloodiest films in Hark’s catalog.
