I like movies where there are a lot of dogs running around and they're supposed to be all menacing and fierce but you can tell they're all good boys having a fun day on the big misty woods set.
Young Rosaleen dreams of a village in the dark woods, where Granny tells her cautionary tales in which innocent maidens are tempted by wolves who are hairy on the inside. As Rosaleen grows into womanhood, will the wolves come for her too?

This is one beautiful and incredibly surreal movie. It’s an anthology of sorts, but maybe the least traditional anthology format I can think of. There is an opening bookend story and then a closing bookend story that is different yet also tied to the opening and it all kind of blurs together with no specific beginning and an ambiguous ending which makes this movie one of the greatest cinematic interpretations of a dream that I’ve ever seen. The stories sort of weave in and out of each other as well as the in and out of the present and the past, mixing dark tales of werewolves with a wonderfully nightmarish version of Little Red Riding Hood. At times it seems like nothing makes sense, but then you realize by the end that what you’ve seen is exactly how you’re supposed to see it. Nice. The sets are just gorgeous and the superb direction and cinematography result in so many memorable images: a head being violently cut off and breaking like porcelain against a wall, blood dripping onto a white rose and slowly turning it red, a wolf breaking through a window in slo-mo. And those really are just a few of many. Also, you’ve got Angela Lansbury giving a deliciously hammy performance and Sarah Patterson is a legit dead ringer for Emilia Clarke so yeah, good surreal times. If you’ve not seen this, it’s on Prime so do give it a go. Even if you don’t love it, you’re sure to be fascinated and impressed by its ambition. Everyone always talks about the werewolf transformations in The Howling and An American Werewolf in London, but bold horror statement: I think the ones here are better than The Howling and at least as (if not more) imaginative than An American Werewolf so they deserve at least as much of the love that those two films get. At least.Bananameter: 🍌 never trust a man whose eyebrows meet in the middle 🍌
This movie looks so fucking cool
