This is an excellent retelling of Shelley’s exemplary irreproachable tale via Hammer and the wonderful Terry Fisher, dialing in on the gothic atmos that would eventually become the studios trademark and bringing this story to an entire new generation of genre fans and soon to be genre fans around the world. The Curse of Frankenstein flourishes with lavish colors, impeccable production design, and its small but incredibly solid cast... headlined by legend Peter Cushing who swings for the fences in a career defining role—dialing up Dr. Frankensteins sinister urge and wicked obsessions tenfold... replacing the manic energy of past portrayals with a calculated evil diabolical in nature. He brings the swagger, even to his villains! This might also be my favorite movie laboratory, and seeing Cushing work his way around it with his dramatic intensities is a damn treat if you ask me. Plus I love Lee as the creature as well, his makeup is incredible, his movements perfect, his coat is dope, and that eye closeup/acid bath rule! Now I love Jack Pierce’s makeup and Karloff’s performance is insurmountable and monolithic, but Christopher Lee is my favorite looking incarnation of Frankensteins creation and that’s just how it is.Total classic with one hell of an incredible final shot, this movie looks impeccable on the new Warner Archive disc—I’ve been waiting years for this to receive the treatment and they really worked wonders. Love that the last couple of years have been so fruitful with wonderful Hammer restorations finally hitting disc here via Scream Factory and Warner Archives. What a time to be alive!
66A classic work from Terence Fisher. Scrumptious coloring and stately appearance gives way to madness and psychological gothic flavors. Probably has the best 'laboratory' set in any color film.
Baron Victor Frankenstein discovers the secret of life and unleashes a cursed, disfigured creature that embarks on a path of murder.
Terence Fisher directed the 1957 film, marking a landmark British horror revival for Hammer Film Productions.
