Another film with a Nazi and his penis at the center of narrative.
Absolument dingue.
THE DISAPPEARANCE OF JOSEF MENGELE is a bleak character study of a black-hearted, unrepentant Nazi hiding in Latin America after World War II. Gorgeously shot in black and white and features an incredible transformative & chilling performance from August Diehl. A grim, two-hour examination of pure hated where every excuse is provided by its subject as to why he was nicknamed the “Angel of Death” but never justifying why his story warranted a film this lacking in suspense or dramatic conflict. Should’ve been told in a linear manner so we could feel the weight of his miserable experience better. Still, it makes for an interesting companion piece to watch after “The Zone Of Interest” highlighting how evil is still able to survive as the world changes and time moves on.
It follows the fugitive Nazi doctor after World War II as he hides in South America under various aliases to escape prosecution.
It was directed by Kirill Serebrennikov in 2025, known for his striking historical and biographical dramas.
It premiered in competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
