Magical realism is pretty epic
Fantasy FilmFest 2026The Fox, the Magpie and the Hole. A hilarious animalistic tale. Looking for an oddly macabre black comedy? This is a joker! There’s a new gem coming from Australia. It’s like an anti posture against CGI and AI. Tenderly handmade puppets!Even when you see it, they are super cute!I want that fox!!What makes them even more special, the Fox speaks with the voice of Olivia Coleman and the Magpie speaks with the voice of Sam Neill! His last appearance in a film what feels surreal, because he is so cheeky talkative! And yes, the animals speak, nobody questions it, everything is what it is. Another strength is how wonderful accessible the cast becomes. This role is a catch for Jay Courtney, he is a likable, a little dull teddybear. Emily Browing is the foxy highlight here, probably the best she has ever done. Claudia Doumit and Peter O’Brien are both very enjoyable and funny in all the scenes they have. Miranda Otto serves delicious beer and drinks!Zlatko Burić, hahaha, this man can be so funny! And that’s it, this film is full of laughs, it’s like a modern fairytale. It turns into very absurd spheres. Gets never really loose, knows when it has to go for the next step and where it wants to go. Waiting for the Schnitzel night!Even it is macabre, it never takes the charismatic feeling away. I’m already curious what Dario Russo will do next after such a debut! It’s also his story, he did the editing and the music! Even the score is pretty special and you go out with a classic ear-worm. Also no wonder the film looks that good, it’s Matthew Chuang who did also the cinematography for the natural poetic gemYou Won’t Be Alone (2022). I hope this film gets a wider recognition. I see it in the top 3 comedies of the year. The festival highlight!Tenderly funny! The insidious Mrs. Fox🦊
