Now THAT is what I call ghostwriting.
I really wanted to see this again so I bought the dvd. (Happy Valentine’s Day to myself!) I’m bumping it up to 5 stars because I think it deserves it. I love it so much. This movie has to have been written by an introvert, it has an introvert’s soul. Lucy Muir: “You can be much more alone with other people than you are by yourself, even if it's people you love.” Even though I do think she was lonely. Lonely for Captain Gregg. Even when she was seeing him she couldn’t be with him, because he wasn’t really there. The whole movie has such a loneliness to it, such a sadness. I don’t usually enjoy watching things that make me cry. This is an exception.
In 1900, a young widow moves into a seaside home that happens to be haunted by the temperamental spirit of its former owner, a dead sea captain, leading to an unconventional lifelong relationship.
The film was directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz in 1947.
The film received an Academy Award nomination for Charles Lang's cinematography.
