70 // B - Full Review + Discussion on The Global Film PodcastQuick Review: The Glorias is an ambitious and epic look at the life of a timeless icon. Featuring marvelous performances from Moore, Vikander, and Monae, and guided by a strong directorial vision, it results in a refreshing take on the biopic genre that ends on a shockingly powerful note.
“You never would have been born.”It took four actresses to play Gloria Steinem over the years. While the film was about an engaging figure and it had a decent story and was made by a competent filmmaker (Julie Taymor), I will gladly point out what worked and what didn't.It painted Gloria's humble upbringing well. Her father was a dreamer and her mother had anxiety, neuroses, low self esteem, and agoraphobia (could they find an actor that could play a doctor and not pronounce it "agraphobia", though?). Watching Mrs. America somewhat recently, I was struck by how much overlap there was. Mrs. America had Margo Martindale as Bella Abzug, while The Glorias featured a passable Bette Midler in the same role. While I wanted to kidnap the costumes Alicia Vikander's Gloria wore as a young woman, she didn't really resemble Julianne Moore, who fit the later version of Gloria Steinem much better. Despite absolutely nailing it by including Janelle Monáe as Dorothy Pitman Hughes and Lorraine Toussaint as Flo Kennedy, it was a crime for the filmmakers to give them such minimal screen time. I got the emotional impact from the script, but the timeline was so messy and kept going back and forth; the editing felt more indecisive and rushed than clever.See it if you're a feminist or a fan of any of the actors. Skip if you hate biopics. Earlier today, IMDb was not allowing votes; now it seems that the downvoters are out in full force. It was not so bad, but it probably won't illuminate your world.Vegan alert: -Reference to salmon and hot dogs-Dad (Timothy Hutton) offers Gloria another egg roll-Sign for corned beef at the diner where Gloria orders hot fudge sundae-Shrimp cocktail at Playboy Mansion-Fur lined coat-Girl's head on a tiger skin rug in a magazine ad
