Super fun Hammer Holmes outing with Cushing in full pimp mode as the famed sleuth and Hammers usual wonderful atmos on full display. Cushing really falls right into the role and it kinda makes you sad that there wasn’t a whole damn series of these with him in the title role.Happy belated birthday to Peter Cushing and Happy birthday to Christopher Lee!❤️❤️❤️
RESEÑA EN ESPAÑOLSPOOKTOBER VI: THE HAMMER OF HORRORBeen hearing about this film for a while thanks to LB, and I'm glad I finally got around to it!I read the book years ago, so I didn't remember much about the premise; that worked to the film's advantage because the mystery element landed more effectively—I had no idea what turns the case would take. I can't say I was especially enthusiastic about the resolution, but I don't blame the movie for that. I enjoyed the few moments of genuine suspense, and the dog was genuinely horrifying at times. The opening contains some classic Hammer horror elements, which are well inserted and set an effective tone.Peter Cushing does an excellent job inhabiting the role of the famed sleuth. He brings the sarcasm and wit present in the novel's characters and blends them with an air of class that suits the part well. As with many fans, I would have loved to see more films with him in this role. André Morell makes a very good Watson; I only wish he and Cushing shared more screen time together. I had read the book some time ago, so I did not expect Christopher Lee to appear as prominently as he does in the film, but he is a pleasant presence, playing a gentleman who becomes entangled in the intrigue.Asher's cinematography is solid. I'm starting to notice the little details, like lighting choices that give Hammer films a subtle yet distinctive touch, at least in his work. I also appreciated the production design; there is something almost theatrical about it, in a way that I found appealing. All in all, and perhaps heretically, I slightly prefer Guy Ritchie's energetic take on this detective (I haven't seen the Cumberbatch series). Nonetheless, this was a fun film anchored by strong performances and a tidy little case. It remains an enjoyable, modest adaptation that rewards viewers who appreciate classic atmosphere and character work.SPOOKTOBER VI: THE HAMMER OF HORRORTODAY SCHEDULEThe SnorkelThe Hound of BaskervillesThe Man Who Could Cheat Death
Hooptober V20/31: before 1970I make no secret nor have any shame about my love for/attraction to Peter Cushing so I’m automatically going to like anything he’s in, but I’m especially fond of his Hammer work. This wasn’t the best one I’ve seen but when you pair him up with Christopher Lee then you’re pretty much guaranteed a decent time at minimum. It’s a little slow in a couple of places, but then watching all the adorable little quirks that Cushing puts into his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes just made me silly happy. I especially loved it when he was sitting in the carriage after the cave collapsed all “lol u mad?” and then started bitching about being hungry. Relatable content. Also, that hound reveal at the end was great with the lighting, camera angle, music, all of it. Really good stuff.Bananameter: 🍌 tarantulasploitation 🍌
