THE LIBRARIANS is an infuriating film that underscores just how troubled our country truly is. As the film warns, we’re on the precipice of some truly terrifying times. Kim A. Snyder’s carefully crafted & sympathetic documentary does an excellent job of highlighting librarians’ vital role in shaping the next generation’s future, preserving the past, and emphasizing why it’s crucial to protect them from those systematically pushing political and religious agendas through book banning. An essential watch that deeply gets under your skin.
Urgent, but never hurried, The Librarians navigates the rising anti-intellectualism movement that has spread across America at a rapid pace over the past five years with a steady hand. Its strength is in showing how the widespread, misinformed decisions made on a legislative level are directly and almost immediately causing harm to individual citizens, especially our most vulnerable community members. Last year, the documentary short, The ABCs of Book Banning, started trying to present the issue within the medium, but that ultimately felt a bit on the shallow side. The depth offered here is a lot more satisfying to sink into, even if the subject matter itself is grave and extremely heavy to grapple with. Librarians are our most essential and impactful civil servants and it is such a devastating experience to see them vilified by the far right movement. Kim A. Snyder’s effort to ensure they are portrayed correctly and through their own words feels particularly essential as we enter Trump’s newest presidency.
The film explores the unprecedented wave of book banning across the United States and the librarians who risk their livelihoods to defend intellectual freedom.
