a gorgeously shot Polish goth musical about homicidal teen mermaids hired to sing at a nightclub. obviously essential. fun fact: i watched this on ambien and spent most of the following day thinking that it was a dream i had. only after someone mentioned that they were going to a press screening of "the mermaid movie" did it click for me like at the end of The Usual Suspects. (i watched it again)
Two mermaid sisters join a cabaret band in 1980s Poland and grapple with their predatory nature and romantic desires.
The film was directed by Agnieszka Smoczyńska, a Polish filmmaker known for this surreal genre-bending 2015 debut.
