When Lord Murashige rises up against the tyrannical Oda, he finds himself besieged within the walls of his own castle. Isolated, he is confronted with a series of mysterious crimes that shatter the fragile order of his court, plunging the fortress into fear and suspicion. With Oda's army closing in and a traitor hiding among his ranks, Murashige is forced into an uneasy alliance with Kanbei, a brilliant and dangerous strategist held prisoner in the dungeon, as he must outwit his enemies and uncover the truth before time runs out.

Got extremely excited in the first act when I thought this was going to be purely a murder mystery set in feudal Japan. It isn't, and what it quickly turns into is extremely good, but I can't say I wasn't temporarily disappointed. In any case Kurosawa's style lends itself perfectly to this sort of classicism, but even while it's a superb recreation of a vintage type of film, the puzzle of its morality remains very modern.
A samurai and a prisoner, but which one is which? A castle under siege and series of four interconnected and baffling murders/mysteries in which the titular Samurai and his prisoner endeavor to solve. I loved the conceit of a guy in a dungeon being so sharp he can solve these stone cold whodunnits in chains, but there is a larger mystery at play here... Early on in this one, our hero of splendid and noble bearing, the merciful Lord Araki Murashige, is told "sir, custom dictates that you must crucify this child!" and him and by extension us, begin to think "hey maybe this Samurai code isn't all it's cracked up to be?" Master at work, is there anyone doing it better than Kurosawa right now?
