The story here is solid, but mostly this film for me is all about the clothing, hair-dos & makeup! The early 30s is my fave time period, & two of the main characters work as models, so there’s fashion shows…🫶The costume designer is uncredited, but Edward Stevenson worked for Columbia Pictures in 1931-2, so most likely it was him.Jean Harlow is such a natural actress & was terrific, & even better I think was Marie Prevost… they are both truly talented.
Sick and tired of living paycheck to paycheck, a small town girl goes to New York where her best friend has already hit it big. After some initial struggles she becomes a successful model and falls in love with a wealthy guy. But not everything is as good as it seems."Three Wise Girls" is a better than average pre-Code romantic drama thanks to Jean Harlow's charismatic presence and William Baudine's measured direction. Playing a no-nonsense good girl, Harlow's star power is arguably this film's biggest selling point. She makes the lines she says sound much better than they really are. The script is overall pretty solemn. There is comic relief, thanks to the third female lead, Marie Prevost, but at the end of the day this feature tackles some serious issues and their grave consequences. Baudine presents everything in a straightforward manner and avoids any over the top campiness.Besides Harlow's impressive debut as a protagonist, the other members of the cast are doing decent jobs in their more limited parts. Mae Clark is memorable as the best friend whose happiness is only a facade. Walter Byron has good chemistry with Harlow and gets the chance to tell a few jokes too.While not exactly a milestone in the history of cinema, "Three Wise Girls" is worth your time. Not only because its a quality flick but also to witness why the great Jean Harlow is still considered one of the biggest Hollywood stars ever.

Things are no easier now than they were a near-century ago, judging by the experiences I had on Bumble last week. I spent seven days in a hamster wheel before fleeing with my sanity still intact: no matter how many dozens of profiles I engaged with throughout the day, these were men who didn't match back, men who matched with me (whether I had initiated or they did) but never answered my introductory message and let it expire after 24 hours, and of course the one man who matched and actually ended the chat immediately, like within a minute. (Thanks a lot, Ryan the Amtrak train dispatcher.) I could see the writing on the wall, and anyway, I seemed to be finding the same people over and over. AI content creators and bodybuilders up the wazoo, but more to the point, the constant main interest of "exploring new cities," bragging about having been to dozens of countries and seeking "my partner for world travel." Okay, but I have the responsibilities of a full-time job and I already live in the greatest city ever, so... short and saucy gal signing off.Still, I'm appreciative that now I finally have the clarity I needed. I haven't had a traditional personal life up to now, so why did I keep trying to fit my round peg into that square hole? I'm considering not only what I want but also the most likely ways to find it, so I'm pivoting to a new direction, one that I think finally makes sense. We shall see!All that being said, Three Wise Girls isn't really anything to write home about, though the travails of Cassie Barnes (Jean Harlow) and Gladys Kane (Mae Clarke) - starry-eyed small-town girls who moved to the big city à la The Sex Perils of Paulette, hungry for romance and both falling for married men (Walter Byron and Jameson Thomas as equally irritating characters) - are improved by how much I love both actresses. The real winner, though, is Marie Prevost as Dot, the working-class comic relief - and not stick-thin either, because we all know how fond I am of my fellow curvy ladies - who is ahead of her time with her remote job as a typist, hits it off with a cute chauffeur (Andy Devine), offers some colorful turns of phrase ("Well, suck my whiskers!") and knows how to make the best of a low-cost meal by turning it into "a feast for a queen" instead ("Aw! There's one of the finest little weenies that ever graced a paper plate. It's a little shriveled from old age, but of course you can’t have everything!"). Dot, you're an icon and a leader, long may you reign."If I ever thought I'd love him so violently, I'd have dropped him the minute I felt it coming on."More to Love: 2024
