The more I think about this film, the less I like it. Such an extremely basic, surface-level "Intimacy 101" guide for teens that barely scratches the surface in terms of porn, sex, feminism, toxic masculinity, intimacy, tenderness, etc. All these things it wants to engage with but never does in any meaningful way. It's entertaining enough to watch and not that bad, but not really that great either. By the end it elicits nothing more than one big: "wait, that's it??"
i so so so wanted to like this more :(very unfortunate that the sexual assault was never actually adressed and put off as innocent inexperiencei like the idea of the movie so much but it fell flat for me at several points. it was super funny though and i imagine such a challenge for the first time actors!!
lovely coming-of-age story in the unlikeliest environment: a shy & introverted boy is the camera operator for his father, who is shooting porn as main actor. sounds hilariously psychoanalytical - there's a scene in here where father & son have a playful fight with the dildo replicas of daddy's penis - but it is that only on such a rather humorous level. in its heart Truly Naked is the growth of a young man past pornography (meaning toxic masculinity) to a 'decent human being' by the way - naturally - of love to a free thinking feminist. this all could go truly wrong but the film works thanks to his carefully shaped, well-beloved characters & superb acting chops of all guys involved: from Caolán O'Gorman as sad-eyed kid to Andrew Howard as tough-edged but well-meaning dad, via Alessa Savage turning her porn star image into a meaningful stepmom role to newcomer Safiya Benaddi as charming love interest, being a real discovery here.Muriel d’Ansembourg worked relentlessly for more than 10 years to bring her vision finally to the big screen. the end result is a heartwarming story in a provocative surrounding, being at its core a lovely story of growing up in the most unusual place, letting you wonder about the themes touched upon en passant.
