A chilling reminder of how authoritarianism works at both the procedural and individual level. Sergey Loznitsa takes his time telling a simple story, letting the viewer take in the walls of silence surrounding a corrupted system. The twenty-or-so minute scenes or pure dialogue envelop you in the psychology of the ideologically possessed.An important reminder to remain vigilant and protective of our legal system
Genuinely, GENUINELY, listen to my PLEAS and just watch Captain Volkonogov Escaped instead of this overrated garbage that has received attention only because of its release at Cannes.A dialogue-driven critique of the Soviet regime, but the dialogue is so unbearably monotone and simple (even though Loznitsa acts like it isn't) that you get the point of the whole movie in the first 20 minutes. It's a careless and boring work made for the Western audiences, which could've been cool if it wasn't so painfully dull and emotionless towards the message from a standpoint of folks from post-Soviet countries. I'm begging on my knees for you all to actually ignore this pretentious but good-looking flick and just watch Captain Volkonogov Escaped, which is, like, 300 times better, and this movie feels like all the actions from Volkonogov, just retold verbally by the most boring person ever. Actually pissed me off. Bring justice to Volkonogov!!!The music is the greatest thing about this rough snoozfest, and it only plays, like, 3 times.
