Movies about addiction are not a rarity in Hollywood. Anytime an actor wants a serious shot at an Oscar, they play a dope fiend, alcoholic, or some other kind of substance abuse. Cody (Will Pouter) is a recovering opiate addict who has been assigned to a county-mandated drug court program. With local sober-living facilities completely full, Cody is forced to live out of his car on the outskirts of town.He gets a job at a lumber mill to help him move forward. But the stresses of life bring back the temptations to shoot up again. The story arc is fairly routine. We've seen it before in countless movies. What sets this film apart is that most of those other films tend to be super melodramatic. They feature great big, over-the-top meltdown scenes. Union County, however has the sense of authenticity. For true addicts, its a lonely, depressing world that features a lot of guilt and anguish. The supporting characters are played by real life recovering drug addicts. When they speak they are not using a script. It is their own words. Their own stories. I particularly like Annette Deao as the real life advocate. She feels real because she is real. Will Pouter as Cody also captures the essence of a small town, quiet, simple guy, whose life is spiraling. It is more an inner turmoil, ready to boil over.It is a quiet film, instead of a showy one. That works to its benefit. I felt like I was watching a small town relative, rather than an audacious actor trying their best to get that Oscar nomination.
Annette used the HELL out of that 4 year acting undergrad
