first hour or so was an unbelievably excellent heist film but unfortunately just like Man Tsz-Keung, the writer also doesn’t know when to call it quits
In the early 1990s, this city of desire, once a land of opportunity, was plagued by rampant crime and a breakdown of order. Man Tsz-keung, a working-class man desperate to change his fate, meets flight attendant Lok Ka-yuen, and the two team up to rob a large sum of money. This success fuels Man Tsz-keung's madness, pushing him into a deeper power struggle with wealthy businessman Chan Fai-yin. Meanwhile, mainland police officer Qi Honggang and Hong Kong police officer Guan Suchen continue their investigation of Wan Ziqiang, leading to a joint operation between the two police forces, setting the stage for a clash between good and evil. This film is fictional.

Zhu Yilong is so hot omgOn a more serious note, this film shares into the same problem as many recent Chinese films — way too much content. The story takes inspiration from the 1991 Cheung Tze-keung case in Hong Kong, and attempts too much with it. There is the “reenactment” of the robbery, the marriage, the kidnap, the bargaining, the gunfights all that jazz. There are colonial references, then the 1997 handover, and then mainland police interference etc etc… it all a big hot mess. The pacing, because there is just so much content, is painful. The opening montage sets a furious pace which is never reciprocated. The middle torture part is a drag and the end is rushed to a point where the main guy gets submerged under the all the scenes about the mainland police. And there is a weirdly explicit scene where Zhu yilong’s character is captured by the Hong Kong triad and tortured. You get the point, or maybe you don’t because there is no point! This film is kind of like The Joker but the director and screenwriter are like look if we don’t include this and that the gov is not gonna let us show it. So we are going to include everything AND add a bunch random filler shots to enrich the atmosphere. Anyhow, might watch again for Zhu yilong ❤️🔥❤️🔥
