Deeply melancholy and contemplative but also extremely funny, with a ridiculous amount of great joke setups and payoffs. Starts teetering a bit in the third act but ultimately lands the plane (in Venice). Malkovich is impossible to look away from
Shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup, CIA agents Chris and Lee are dispatched from Santiago to Easter Island by their bureau chief, MJ. Amongst the Island's iconic statues, and as the longtime partners wrestle with their dark pasts and present conspiracies, Chris's newfound bond with a pair of rebellious students threatens to send everyone’s trip to this remote paradise sideways.

It's really really similar to In Bruges - not quite as good, but the conclusion is so rewarding. Incredibly sombre, a thorough reckoning with mortality that plays with the line between political conspiracy and personal tragedy. John Malkovich is fantastic. It does lack the bite of McDonagh's best stuff; I simply don't think his work with American actors is as effective in a darkly comedic way. Also has a brilliant image reference to Ford’s The Searchers so points for that.
