Chania doesn't have many screens, but they are well spread: two indoor cinemas open all year and two open-air summer cinemas right in the centre. This page puts all their showtimes together, by film and by venue.
For an indoor screen you have two choices. Cineplex Ellinis sits on Tzanakaki Street, directly opposite the Municipal Garden, with five halls and two main evening shows, usually around 20:30 and 22:30. It is the one you can walk to from the Agora and the old town. Megaplace in Vlites, on the road towards Souda, is an entertainment complex with three modern halls (the largest has well over 450 seats), a bowling alley and a play area, plus easy parking. It is where families and anyone driving in from the suburbs or villages tend to go.
In summer the city changes. From late May the open-air cinemas open: the municipal Kipos screens inside the Municipal Garden, one show a night at a very low ticket price, while the Attikon summer cinema on Eleftheriou Venizelou is a garden with flowers, director's chairs and a bar serving popcorn, snacks and beer. Megaplace also runs an open-air screen in the summer months. Foreign films are shown in their original language with Greek subtitles; children's animation usually plays dubbed into Greek, so check the listing if you want the original version.
If you are after arthouse and festival titles, the Chania Film Festival takes place in the city every autumn, and its film club runs summer screenings in places such as the Kipos garden and Halepa. A quick way to pick: blockbusters and kids' premieres at Megaplace or Ellinis, a walkable night in the centre at Ellinis or, in summer, either open-air cinema. Mood gathers the full Chania programme, with times and venue for every film.
Two indoor cinemas run all year: Cineplex Ellinis opposite the Municipal Garden and Megaplace in Vlites towards Souda. In summer the open-air Kipos and Attikon in the centre join them, along with Megaplace's outdoor screen. All their showtimes are in Mood's Chania programme.
Yes. English-language and other foreign films play in their original language with Greek subtitles, so visitors can follow them without trouble. The exception is children's animation, which is mostly dubbed into Greek. Each showtime on Mood notes the language.
Indoor evening shows usually start around 20:30 and 22:30, with extra afternoon kids' shows at weekends. Open-air cinemas start once it gets dark, roughly 21:00 to 21:30. Programmes change every Thursday, so check today's times on Mood.
Megaplace is the most practical, with parking, a play area and bowling on site and plenty of dubbed children's films. In summer the Kipos often has kids' film nights at a low price. See which day each family film plays in Mood's programme.
