1 open-air cinema is screening films in Thessaloniki this season - catch one under the stars. Tap any cinema for its showtimes by day on Mood.
From late May to late September, Thessaloniki watches its films outdoors, in garden cinemas tucked between apartment blocks and on the seafront. Here are the city's open-air cinemas by neighbourhood, with what each is showing.
Start on the waterfront. Natali sits at number 3 on Megalou Alexandrou, right where the seafront boulevard begins, a garden screen with the sea breeze coming in over the wall; it is officially listed as a monument of modern culture. Further east along the coast, in Kalamaria, Avra is the municipal open-air cinema on Aretsou beach, running for decades a few metres from the water. Out in the eastern hills, the municipal Cine Panorama sits in a green spot next to Panorama's town hall, with a roof that closes if it rains.
In the centre, two cinemas hide inside the blocks. Alex, at the corner of Olympou and Iasonidou, is one of the original neighbourhood open-airs, with white gravel underfoot, plenty of greenery, director's chairs and two-seat sofas, and it is also listed as a monument of modern culture. Apollon on Sarantaporou is a small garden full of jasmine, with candles and basil on the tables and a programme that mixes new films with classics. Ellinis on Leoforos Stratou has two screens, one inside the Thessaloniki International Fair grounds and one on the roof of the Vellidio conference centre next door. At the end of summer, the Thessaloniki Concert Hall and the Film Festival run Cinema with a View on the rooftop of the M2 building, looking out over the gulf.
The routine is the same everywhere: two screenings a night, the first once it is dark, around 21:00 in high summer and a little earlier by September, and a second one late, around 23:00. Films are subtitled, not dubbed, apart from children's films. Most people pick up a cold beer, popcorn or a toast at the bar before the lights go down. On windy or cool nights, bring a light jacket. Use the listings below to see what every open-air cinema in Thessaloniki is playing tonight.
The main ones are Natali on the seafront at Megalou Alexandrou, Alex and Apollon in the centre, Ellinis at the fairgrounds and on the Vellidio roof, Avra on Aretsou beach in Kalamaria and the municipal Cine Panorama. Mood shows tonight's films for each.
The season runs from late May or early June to late September, depending on the weather. Cinema with a View on the Concert Hall rooftop only runs at the end of summer. Check Mood for the current programme.
