A Band Called Ma is the collaborative project of Austin, Texas based multi-instrumentalists Dom Sena and Austin Barker. They blend 90s-grunge guitar riffs, ambient ethereal textures and punchy driving rhythms, inspired by bands like Radiohead, Alex G and Slowdive. The sound centers around their vocal harmonies, with lyrics that explore abstract, yet universal emotions. After meeting in Austin playing in friends bands, they took an impromptu trip to Big Bend National Park in West Texas in 2020. They were captivated by the vast alien landscape and centuries-old canyons. The mystical sprawling terrain reminded them of filmmaker Hao Miyazaki’s use of “ma” in nature to show the passage of time and create moments of stillness. “Ma” is a philosophical Japanese term referring to emptiness in space or a pause in time that gives shape, connection, and meaning to what surrounds it. In the Texas desert sun, the quiet mysteries and wandering melodies sparked the beginning of a recording project that would eventually become A Band Called Ma.
